Iron Ore
Mineral Category: Metallic Mineral
Overview: Iron ore is a naturally occurring mineral from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. It is the primary raw material for iron and steel production and forms the backbone of modern industrial and infrastructure development worldwide.
Key Uses & Industries Served:
- Iron and steel industry (production of pig iron, sponge iron, and steel)
- Construction and infrastructure (buildings, bridges, railways, roads)
- Automotive and engineering industries
- Machinery, tools, and capital goods manufacturing
Importance to Infrastructure / Economy: Iron ore is a strategic mineral essential for economic growth and industrialization. It underpins the steel sector, which in turn supports infrastructure creation, manufacturing, transportation, and urban development, making it a critical contributor to national development and economic resilience. CMDC operated a Iron ore mine of 0.5 MTPA in Kanker District. CMDC also plans to expand its capacity to 2 MTPA to boost Chhattisgarh’s Iron ore supply. Further, CMDC jointly operated two other mines of combined capacity of (17 MTPA at peak rated capacity) with NMDC through its Joint Venture - NCL
Projects Overview:
CMDC holds significant iron ore resources across multiple deposits, strengthening the state’s contribution to steel and allied industries. .
