Corundum
Mineral Category: Non-metallic / Industrial Mineral
Overview: Corundum is a naturally occurring crystalline form of aluminium oxide and is known for its exceptional hardness and durability. It is widely used in abrasive, refractory, and advanced industrial applications due to its high wear resistance and thermal stability.
Key Uses & Industries Served:
- Abrasives and grinding materials
- Refractories and high-temperature applications
- Ceramics and advanced materials
- Precision engineering and surface finishing
Importance to Infrastructure / Economy: Corundum supports manufacturing, engineering, and high-performance industrial sectors by enabling efficient material processing and durable end products.
CMDC operates a corundum mine in a JV (Chhattisgarh Corundum mines Limited). Lease area is of 3.7 Ha . The lease boast of semi perious and gem grade ruby.
Projects Overview: CMDC holds corundum deposits including Kuchnoor (3.7 Ha, approximately 14 tonnes reserves, PRC 1 TPA) along with additional prospects such as Sonakukanar, Nagaras, Dhangole and Rallapalli. Corundum is a valuable industrial mineral used in abrasive and refractory applications due to its high hardness and thermal stability. These deposits contribute to specialty mineral resource development within the state.
