Cassiterite (Tin Ore)
Mineral Category: Metallic mineral
Overview: Cassiterite is the chief ore of tin (SnO₂) and the most important commercial source of tin metal. It is a heavy oxide mineral typically found in placer deposits and hydrothermal veins, valued for its high tin content and ease of beneficiation.
Key Uses & Industries Served:
- Electronics industry (solder, circuit boards)
- Packaging industry (tin plating of steel for food cans)
- Chemical industry (tin compounds and alloys)
- Automotive and engineering alloys (bronze, specialty alloys)
Importance to Infrastructure / Economy:
Cassiterite is critical for supplying tin, a strategic metal essential for electronics, packaging, and advanced manufacturing. Its downstream applications support industrial production, digital infrastructure, and value-added manufacturing, contributing to technological development and economic diversification.
CMDC is one of the few miners of tin in the country. It operates 5 mines and processing centre at Jagdalpur in joint venture with M/S Precious Minerals & Smelting Limited (PMSL) and 5 tin collection centres for tribals.
This highlights CMDC’s commitment toward social and financial upliftment of the local communities.
Projects Overview:
Chhattisgarh is the only state in India producing primary tin ore, and CMDC plays a pioneering role in the exploration and development of tin resources. The corporation holds multiple tin deposits. Tin is collected from tribal communities through the following collection centers: Padapur (Bacheli), Katekalyan, Chikpal, Nama, Tongpal, and Chitalnar.
