Bauxite
Mineral Category: Non- Metallic
Overview: Bauxite is basically an aluminous rock that contains hydrated aluminium oxide as the main constituent and iron oxide, silica & titania as minor constituents present in varying proportions. Hydrated aluminium oxides present in the bauxite ore are diaspore and boehmite, Al2 O3 .H2 O (Al2 O3 :85%; Al: 45%); gibbsite or hydrargillite, Al2 O3 .3H2 O (Al2 O3 : 65.4%; Al: 34.6%), and bauxite (containing colloidal alumina hydrogel), Al2 O3 .2H2 O (Al2 O3 :73.9%; Al: 39.1%). The iron oxide in bauxite ore is present as haematite or goethite; silica as clay; and free quartz & titania as leucoxene or rutile.
Key Uses & Industries Served:
- Alumimium industry
- Steel industry
- Aerospace industry
- Housing industry
Importance to Infrastructure / Economy: Bauxite is the primary, indispensable ore for aluminum production, with over 90% of global mining output refined into alumina for the aerospace, automotive, construction, and packaging industries. It is critical to economic growth, enabling the manufacturing of lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and recyclable materials essential for modern infrastructure, transportation, and decarbonization efforts.
Projects Overview:
Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation Limited (CMDC) holds a diversified portfolio of ten bauxite projects spread across key mineral-bearing districts of the state, covering a cumulative lease area of approximately 711.091 hectares. These deposits collectively host geological reserves of about 17.272 million tonnes, forming an important raw material base for the aluminium industry.
